About

The Borough Theatre is a lively venue situated right in the centre of the historic market town of Abergavenny, the traditional Gateway to Wales.

There are lots of opportunities and initiatives for residents, local businesses and those with a passion for the theatre to be part of the exciting refurbishment of the much-loved venue, which has presented a varied programme of community and professional events and stood as the focal point of Abergavenny for over 150 years.

The theatre is part of the town hall building and dates back to 1870. It boasts an intimate auditorium with excellent sight lines and acoustics, which succeeds in blending historic and traditional features with a modern ambience.

The theatre is committed to presenting a wide-ranging programme of live events each year featuring drama, opera, ballet, a wide range of live music concerts, children’s events, musicals, comedy, dance and storytelling.

We are very proud of the fact that many headline artistes from the UK and overseas visit the Borough Theatre (going back to The Beatles in 1963…) as well as some of the most interesting new companies creating theatre and dance. Our programme aims to appeal to all tastes and ages – with shows for everyone from pre-school years upwards.

The performing tradition runs deep in Abergavenny and the town supports many local amateur theatre and operatic companies who regularly perform at the Borough Theatre. It is from these local amateur companies that the theatre has drawn many of its team of volunteers who act as stewards, stage crew, and bar staff.

Although much has been achieved, the ever growing demand for use of the theatre from both the professional and community sectors only goes to demonstrate that much work lies ahead in the quest to extend and develop the activities and facilities which have made the Borough Theatre Monmouthshire’s “Jewel in the Crown”.
