About
RSPB Newport Wetlands Nature Reserve offers a haven for wildlife on the edge of the city, but is a great place for people too with a RSPB visitor centre, a café, shop and children's play area.
Covering over 438 hectares from Uskmouth to Goldcliff, the reedbeds, saline lagoons, wet grassland and scrub, have attracted a wealth of wetland birds. The reserve is also an excellent place to see other wildlife.
Newport Wetlands is a blend of wetlands, reedbeds and estuary habitats, including the thick, squelchy mud that waders and wildfowl love to forage in.
Look among the reedbeds for Lapwings and Oystercatchers, or look skyward for Swallows and Swifts through the summer. Warm days bring dragonflies, bees and Grass Snakes out, and we also often see Weasels and Stoats. As dusk falls, watch thousands of Starlings take to the sky for their beautiful winter murmurations.
There is also a permissive dog walking route on the perimeter of the reserve (marked by pawprint signs) but dogs are not allowed in the visitor center itself.

Road Directions
Join the A48 at either junction 24 or 28 of the M4. Follow the A48 until you come to the Spytty Retail Park roundabout. Exit onto the A4810 Queensway Meadows. At the first roundabout take the third exit onto Meadows Road and follow the brown tourist signs to the reserve.The Number 63 bus from Newport city centre goes to the visitor centre; it is a demand responsive service.
